If you’re looking for an action-thriller with dazzling locations, heart-pounding car chases, and a Hollywood A-list cast, The Union on Netflix is worth a watch. Directed by Julian Farino, this film delivers a mix of intense action, suspense, and occasional humor. With a strong ensemble cast, The Union has all the ingredients for an entertaining night, even if it does not quite hit every mark.
The Union follows Mike (Mark Wahlberg), an average blue-collar guy whose life takes a sharp turn when he is recruited by his ex-girlfriend Roxanne (Halle Berry) to join the world of espionage. It’s been 25 years since they were high school sweethearts, but now they’re teaming up to recover classified data that could compromise the CIA and other top agencies. The film sets up an intriguing story to hook viewers from the start.
However, Mike’s transformation into a secret agent feels a bit rushed. The movie glosses over the challenges of becoming a spy in just two weeks, which feels a little too fast-paced for the high-stakes mission he’s about to undertake.
Fortunately, Mike doesn’t go at it alone—he’s got a crack team to train him. Athena (Alice Lee), a skilled medical technician, handles all things health-related, while Frank (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), the battle-hardened combat trainer, toughens him up for the fight. Then there’s Foreman (Jackie Earle Haley), the tech-savvy who makes sure Mike is ready for the digital side of spying. Overseeing it all is their no-nonsense boss, played by the ever-imposing J.K. Simmons.
The film also weaves in humor, especially with Mike’s surprising preference for older women. In the opening scene, Mike reconnects with his former seventh-grade English teacher, played by Dana Delany. At 68, Delany looks gorgeous and far younger than her years, and this little subplot adds a quirky touch to Mike’s character. It’s clear he has a thing for mature women.
The Union also scores points for its impressive visuals. The movie was filmed across breathtaking locations in London, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, showcasing jaw-dropping scenery that adds a touch of Mission: Impossible flair. The beautiful landmarks and landscapes make you want to pack your bags and travel the world.
When it comes to action, the film doesn’t hold back. The car chases are electrifying with stunts that keep you on the edge of your seat. These scenes are some of the most exciting in the movie, bringing high energy and tension to the screen.
But while the action sequences hit the mark, the romantic chemistry between Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry doesn’t quite land. Their characters’ relationship feels underdeveloped, and with so much focus on the action, there’s little time for romance. A sequel could explore their dynamic more deeply, which would add a layer of complexity to their partnership.
Despite its flaws, The Union has some surprising twists that will keep you guessing. The film doesn’t follow a predictable formula, which adds to its appeal. It’s refreshing when an action movie can still surprise you.
